Full Tilt Poker pro Alessio Isaia wins WPT Venice

Dublin, Ireland

Italian survives epic eight-hour heads-up battle to win €380K

Alessio Isaia became the first Italian to win a World Poker Tour Championship title with victory at the 2011 WPT Venice. The Full Tilt Poker pro earned the €380,000 first prize after an epic heads-up battle with Szablocs Mayer that lasted eight hours and 20 minutes.

A field of 523 players entered the €3,300 buy-in event, which ran from February 3rd through February 8th, at the Casino di Venezia in Venice. Alessio led the tournament after day 1A and reached the final table with the second largest chip stack.

However, by the time the tournament reached heads-up play against Mayer, Alessio held just 2,800,000 of the 15,665,000 chips on the table. He would take over eight hours to wrestle the title from his Hungarian opponent, finally emerging as the winner after Mayer shoved all-in with Qc-6c and Alessio called with Ah-Qd. Both players missed the 8c-4s-2s-3h-Jc board and Alessio was announced the winner.

This marks the biggest win of Alessio’s career so far, surpassing his victory at the 2009 IPT San Remo Main Event, where he earned €140,000. His latest triumph takes his career tournament earnings beyond the €1 million mark.
