Actor, film producer and charity fundraiser Don Cheadle first started playing poker in the 1990’s. He developed a strong interest for the game and started playing Texas Hold ´em home games on a regular basis. As his skills improved, he began to play live tournaments in his home town.
In 2007, Don decided to put his passion to good use and joined forces with Annie Duke and Norman Epstein to found Ante Up for Africa. The annual $5K No-Limit Hold ´em tournament raises funds for charities addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, attracting celebrities and poker pros including Team Full Tilt’s Howard Lederer, Phil Ivey and Chris Ferguson. To date, Ante Up for Africa has raised over $1 million in funds.
Don has enjoyed success on televised poker tournaments. In 2007, he defeated friend and Team Full Tilt player Phil Ivey on NBC Heads Up and in 2008 he defeated Full Tilt Pro David Pham on the same show. He has also achieved impressive results on Poker After Dark and Celebrity Shoot Out.
Don’s renowned acting career began with “Hamburger Hill” in 1987. Other hit films include “Talk to Me”, “Crash”, and the blockbusters “Oceans 11”, “12” and “13”. Don was nominated for an Oscar for his lead role in the film “Hotel Rwanda”. Don is also a published author. He co-wrote the book “Not On Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur And Beyond”.
When he’s not working, campaigning for charity or playing poker, Don’s priority is his family. “I love being a family man and that takes up most of my time outside of being on a set and/or producing movies. I love to golf and wish there were more hours in the day to do that too.”
