Felipe Montenegro plays online at Full Tilt Poker.
A former professional tennis player who began playing poker five years ago to pass time while traveling between tournaments, Felipe Montenegro has progressed through the ranks rapidly.
Born and raised in Costa Rica, Felipe moved to the USA to play tennis for Drake University in Iowa, before joining the professional circuit and working as a tennis coach. During this time, he started playing poker with his friends before adopting a more serious approach and competing in online tournaments. He built up his bankroll through playing in small buy-in tournaments, with impressive earnings along the way.
Felipe believes that bankroll management and discipline are the most important characteristics for poker players. "Players should study the game before investing a lot of money in it. If you do that well then you will always play within your bankroll and play the game the right way," he says.
Like any professional sportsman, Felipe has a winning mentality and a competitive edge. Speaking about his preference for playing in tournaments instead of ring games, he says: "I like the challenge of winning a tournament and beating a field."
