Brian “sbrugby” Townsend plays online at Full Tilt Poker.

There are very few people who could turn a weekly game with friends into a successful career as a professional poker player. Brian Townsend is one of them. It was a little over two years ago that Brian started playing poker, and since then he’s developed a reputation as one of the most successful high-stakes players in the game today.
After completing an electrical engineering degree in his native California, Brian began to pursue his interest in poker. He started off by spending hours in low-limit ring games where he studied both his opponents and the strategic aspects of the game that would give him an edge over the competition. Soon, he was winning consistently and moving up in limits. By the spring of 2006, he had the experience and the bankroll to begin playing professionally.
Brian’s first money finish on the live tournament scene after he turned pro came when he took 10th-place at the WSOPC No-Limit Hold ‘em Championship at Harrah’s in New Orleans, collecting more than $22,000 in prize money. He followed this with another solid finish in October, when he took home over $12K in the 2006 WPT $10K No-Limit Hold ‘em Championship event.
While his tournament results have been impressive, Brian is better known for his ring-game play. He regularly plays stakes as high as 300/600 online, and as high as 2K/4K in live No-Limit games and has walked away from the table with as much as $1.85 million in winnings after a single session. One of the best known of these took place during the summer of 2007 at the Bellagio. Brian sat down to play with the likes of Sammy Farha, David Benyamine, Johnny Chan, and Patrik Antonius, and walked away as one of the biggest winners.
Brian’s accomplishments have generated a fair share of media coverage as well. He made regular appearances on High Stakes Poker’s third season and also appeared in the Full Tilt Million Dollar Cash Game. Brian was also the first “online” player to be featured as a cover story by CardPlayer magazine, where he was described as the most successful player in online poker history.
Brian is also an intense competitor away from the poker table. A self-professed “sports enthusiast”, he is an avid rugby player and competes in triathlons.
