Rino Mathis

Rino Mathis is no stranger to serious gaming. He began playing chess at age 10 and developed into a national competitor in his native Switzerland. Years later, he moved on to backgammon and eventually won the 1993 European Championship. As it happened, this was also the time that he seriously got into poker.

Rino’s competitive spirit has clearly carried over to his poker career. Since becoming a full-time professional in 2001, Rino has won more than 40 European tournaments and racked up an impressive list of cash finishes world wide. In addition to his consistently strong finishes in Austrian tournaments, Rino has made cash finishes and final tables from Barcelona to Copenhagen. His most notable victory came at the Master Classics of Poker in 2002 at the €3000 Lido event in Amsterdam, where he walked away with $172K.

Rino has experienced success outside of Europe as well. Most recently, he scored at the 2007 WSOP $1.5K Omaha Hi/Lo event, earning more than $4.5K. Prior to that, Rino cashed in the 2004 WSOP in the $3K Pot-Limit Hold ‘em event, taking home over $5K for his effort.

When he’s not out on the European tournament circuit, Rino’s at home with his wife and two children in Uster, Switzerland. He enjoys spending time with his family and has a passion for good food and wine. Known as the “Poker Spokesperson” in Switzerland, he is actively involved in developing the professional poker scene.

While he prefers tournaments for live play, Rino most often plays ring games online. Look for Rino playing No-Limit Hold ‘em and Pot-Limit Omaha at Full Tilt Poker.
