Markus Lehmann has always been a competitive gamer, experiencing great success in both chess and backgammon as a teenager. In the following years, he developed a taste for 5-Card Stud and Draw Poker, and played poker professionally between 1979 and 1986. However, Markus left the game to pursue a business career – playing poker went back to being a hobby and his job became the center of his life. As fate would have it, this was not to be his last career change.
It wasn’t until 1999 that he became seriously interested in poker again. After watching Texas Hold ‘em on US television, he made the decision to get back into the game. As a result, he devoted himself to learning Texas Hold ‘em, reading and watching every bit of instructional material that he could get his hands on. By 2002, he had become a consistent winning player in ring games around the US.
Following his respectable performances in the US, Markus headed back to Europe and decided to test his skill on the tournament circuit. In February of 2005, he took first and second place in back-to-back tournaments in Bregenz, earning a total of $47K. Bolstered by these experiences, he made his debut WSOP appearance a couple of months later, and cashed in the $1.5K No-Limit Hold ‘em event.
While Markus continued to experience great success playing in smaller tournaments and ring games, his next big tournament victory came in August, 2007. He took down the WPT €7.5K No-Limit Hold ‘em Championship in Barcelona. Not only did he earn €562K, he also became the first German to win a WPT title. Most recently, Markus won the 2008 CAPT Bregenz Open €2K No-Limit Hold ‘em event, taking home more than €95K.
In his spare time, Markus enjoys golfing and taking care of his extensive fine wine collection. Not a man to sit still, he regularly moves between his personal residences in Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria.
