Matt Jarvis wins first WSOP bracelet

Dublin, Ireland

27-year-old Canadian takes down WSOP Event #40 for more than $800K

Matt Jarvis won Event #40 at the 2011 World Series of Poker*, capturing a first prize of over $800K and his first WSOP bracelet. The Full Tilt Poker pro outlasted the 731 other players who took part in the $5,000 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em tournament.

Jarvis, who burst onto the poker scene in 2010 by finishing 8th in the WSOP Main Event, dominated the tournament from the start. After finishing Day 1 as the chip leader, the British Columbia native held an above-average chip stack for all of Day 2 and, over the course of Day 3, continued to accumulate chips on his way to the final table. By the time the field was whittled down to just two, Jarvis held a commanding 2-to-1 chip lead over Justin Filtz.

Despite the fact that Event #40 was originally scheduled for three days, heads-up play was halted after three hours (as the WSOP’s daily time limit was reached) and the two players returned to continue their duel on an unexpected Day 4.

The final day’s play only lasted five hands, with Filtz committing his remaining chips preflop with K-9 of diamonds and Jarvis quickly calling with A-8 off suit. Neither player’s cards connected with the 5-3-6-2-3 board, allowing the Full Tilt Poker pro to claim one of the poker world’s most sought after prizes, a WSOP bracelet.

The Canadian pro’s latest win takes his career tournament earnings beyond the $2 million mark, with Jarvis the fifth of his countrymen to win a bracelet at this year’s World Series.
