A Nice Start to the Series

Posted by Kristy Gazes

I cashed in the first event of the series for a small profit, and I’m pretty happy about that. I was 0 for 18 in last year’s WSOP, so any sort of win was good for my confidence.

I then took a couple of days off. I went back to Los Angeles, where I live, to see my favorite band in the world, Radiohead. They were playing at the Greek Theater, which is a really nice, small venue, and there was no way I was going to miss that. They’re playing again tonight, and I was toying with the idea of flying back to catch the show.

Today I played in my second event, the $2,500 short-handed no-limit tournament. I busted early. I won’t go into any hands in great detail. Suffice to say that I played like a donkey. In these early tournaments, where they don’t start you with a lot of chips, I like to accumulate chips early, and I’m willing to gamble. But even that reasoning doesn’t explain my play in the hand where I lost most of my chips. Oh, well.

I’m happy with my decision to go back to see the show. I was here for six solid weeks last year, and I was pretty worn out by the end. This year I’m trying hard to keep more balance and do some of the things I enjoy outside of poker.

I’ll probably talk more about the importance of balancing poker with other things in your life in another post. Now, I’m going to head back to my apartment and relax for a while.

Till next time,

Kristy
