Carlos Mortensen will be playing at the final table of the $1,500 No-Limit event later today. I chatted with Carlos to see how he would be approaching this final table.

John Juanda enters the second day of the $1,500 pot-limit hold ‘em event in familiar position – near the top of the leader board. He’s third in chips, with a stack of 53,000.

What makes John such a great player? I asked some of his Full Tilt peers. Here’s what they had to say.

I’d been playing well. My stack was about average and I’d been playing patiently. I didn’t see any cards for a few orbits and had to fold once to a re-raise. Then I got moved to a new table and I felt it was time to change gears. I needed to pick up some chips.

I made it to day 2 of the first No-Limit hold ‘em event, and I was feeling great. I think I played really well yesterday and if not for some lousy luck and one lousy play, I would have been among the chip leaders.

During the opening days of the 2005 WSOP, there was only one topic of discussion: the incredible scale the event had achieved. The tournament room in the Rio hotel was massive and the crowd was not to be believed. The pros, the media, the amateur players – everyone was awed by the sheer size of it all.

My number one goal for this year’s WSOP is to win the $50,000 buy-in HORSE event. That shouldn’t be much of a problem. After I put on the bracelet, I’ll take a nice long vacation.

At the start of the hand I had about $21,000. The blinds were $400/$800 with a $100 ante. It was small blind versus big blind. I raised before the flop to $3,000. My opponent called. We had $6,800 in the pot. The flop came 4-4-8 with two hearts. I had J-5 of hearts and had to make a bet I really didn’t want to make. I bet $4,000. After I bet, he moved all in for $9,900 more. I put him on A-8. I didn’t put him on a 4. I also didn’t put him on a heart draw.

I’ve made four final tables in the last five years at the World Series, and so far my best finish is third. But I really think this is my year. I’ve cleared my entire calendar and I’m planning on playing almost every event over the next seven weeks.

It feels good to be one of the chip leaders at this point in the tournament. Overall, my play has been pretty steady. I’ve been playing my usual game, and everything’s been working out.

I have been playing a lot of poker lately. You need to be sharp going in, you know, seeing different situations at the poker table, so I played a ton of poker right before the World Series of Poker.
