I had a chance to catch up with Rafe Furst before he sat down to play the second day of the $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold’em event. He seemed calm and cool and ready to play.
SR: How does it feel being in the top 30 at this point in the tournament?
RF: Depending upon what source you read—it varies—I am either in 25th or 19th place. More importantly, I have an above average chip stack. I have about 33,000 or 34,000, and the average is about 25,000 so that’s really all you can ask for. You can’t win it all at this stage. I can only continue to play solid poker. I’m just going to size up my table.

SR: How did you get to this point?
RF: There weren’t any monstrous double-ups for me yesterday. I did win a big pot or two towards the end of the day. I am near my high-water mark. There weren’t any big showdowns for me either. I won the chips without having to show my cards. There were also a couple of coinflips I won early on, which kept me alive. I won some big pots and I lost some big pots, but I didn’t have any monstrous swings. I would say I had a lot less variance than most of the players, and I’m happy about that.
SR: Do you have any particular strategy heading into today?
RF: I’m just going to wait and see what the table conditions look like, where we are with the blinds and stack sizes. I imagine people are going to start feeling pretty short-stacked here pretty soon. Yesterday, people were playing fairly tight at my tables. They weren’t nearly as aggressive and loose as they were in the no-limit event. I have a feeling the action’s going to start picking up pretty soon.
