First Cash of 2006
Yesterday I got knocked out of the $2,000 Omaha hi-lo event in twenty-third place. I was hoping to get farther, but the blinds escalated, and I played a big pot where I had a ton of outs – like half the deck – but didn’t hit. My take for the event was $6,097.
Even in the late stages of this tournament, there were a bunch of people who didn’t understand the game well. In one hand, while there were two aces on board, a player bet on the river while holding a small flush and a terrible low. I called him because I had a better low. For the high, he was up against quad Aces. Like a lot of people in this tournament, this guy really had no idea how to value his hands. He didn’t realize that the only hands that would call or raise him would have him beat.
If you’re playing only hold ‘em, I encourage you to try to pick up some of the other games. It’s nice to see more than two cards on occasion and playing different games helps keep poker fresh and interesting. And when people play this badly, you can make good money once you learn the game.
Today we have the first Stud event. That should be a lot of fun.
