Gambling With Gavin

Posted by Storms Reback

Gavin Smith is off to his typical hot start in today’s $5,000 Short-Handed No-Limit Hold’em event. He in particular seems to feed off the poor play and bad decision-making that usually springs from amateurs in the first few rounds of play in these large multi-table tournaments. A gambler’s gambler, he’ll pounce on every opportunity given him to double up or call it an early day. In one such instance he called an all-in preflop re-raise with A-K and caught an ace on the flop to take down his opponent’s jacks. “You’re not going to get me to fold those coin flips,” Gavin said as if his tournament hadn’t been at stake. “What, are you crazy?”

The very next hand, Gavin called WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT HIS CARDS after the player under the gun limped. The flop came 9-9-5 and the player under the gun bet $350. Gavin casually tossed a pink chip onto the table and said, “I don’t know what he bet, but I call.” After the 6 of spades fell on the turn, both players checked. The 8 of spades fell on the river and Gavin led out for $500. It must be mentioned that HE STILL HADN’T LOOKED AT HIS CARDS. His opponent called and Gavin flipped over 4-5, which took the pot.

In between hands Gavin yelled at Phil Gordon who was sitting one table over, challenging him to a karaoke contest. Never one to back down from a challenge, Phil was quick to take him up on it. “I’m going over to Imperial Palace after this to practice,” Phil told Gavin at one point. “You don’t need to practice your singing,” responded Gavin. “You need to practice your dancing.”
