I Just Tripled Up!

Posted by Andy Bloch

At the start of the day, just before they broke our table, I doubled a player up. I had two nines in the big blind, and he moved all in from the button with two fours. I called and lost a $45,000 pot. After that I just held on to my stack and picked up some chips until I got aces.

I tripled up in a dream situation. I had aces against kings and queens. I made it $6,500. The guy with the queens [Joe Liebman] made it $20,000, and Blair Rodman moved in for $20,000 more with kings. The other guy had about $30,000 or so left. He probably should have thought about laying his hand down. If he thinks he might have Blair beat then he can call because of that extra $16,000 on the side. But if he thinks he’s behind on that side pot then he’s got to lay it down. If it was only $10,000 more, it’s an automatic call because he’s getting 8-1 on the pot.

He’s getting 8-1 on that money, which is good, but he’s losing a lot on the rest of the money. I think if he thought about it he would have folded. I guess Blair could have had two jacks in that situation or two queens. But it’s even worse for him if Blair’s got the other two queens. If Blair had A-K then his call would have been right. Of course a face card came on the river, but luckily it was a jack. That was a little scary.

So that’s been my day so far. Losing with the nines against the fours, stealing a few pots, and then the aces. I’m feeling pretty good at this point. I just posted my blinds and I’m at about $91,000. I’m one of the bigger stacks at my table. I might even be the biggest stack.
