I haven’t cashed in any of the first four events I’ve played. I don’t think I’ve been playing bad poker, though. In the first event I got a lot of chips – worked my stack up to 12,000 – but then I got pretty unlucky in three hands.
In the last event, I doubled up by flopping a set, and a little while later I turned a set of Queens. Unfortunately, my opponent flopped a flush. If I had turned the Queen of clubs instead of the Queen of spades I probably would have lost another 500 or so, but it was the Queen of spades. I decided to put some pressure on my opponent who I was hoping had one club. But he had two clubs and I was headed for the rail.
I think after every tournament, you have to ask yourself, “Did I play well?” In a long set of tournaments like this, you need to ask this question from the very beginning. Because after the 17th tournament, if you still haven’t cashed, you’ll be wondering if you’re playing good poker. You need to give yourself a confidence boost and remind yourself that you’re doing the right things — you’re just getting unlucky.
Of course, you always want to re-evaluate. Maybe you’re calling too much or not playing aggressively enough. But if you’re playing well, take pride in that and go into the next event feeling good and ready to play.
