Looking Forward to the HORSE Event

Posted by Chris Ferguson

I am most excited about the main event—it’s the granddaddy of all poker events—but I’m also really excited about the $50,000 HORSE event. It’s a huge event, but I think it’s kind of ridiculous to think of it as the new world championship. I don’t think anything can ever eclipse the main event of the World Series.

I think there are a lot of great players who feel that their chances of becoming a world champion are dwindling because they see 8,000 people entering the main event. No matter how good you are you’re still going to be at least 300- or 400- or even 500-1 to win that event.

A lot of pros want to see a bigger buy-in for that event, which would limit the size of the field, so they would have a better chance of winning, but I actually like very large open events. I like having large fields. I think we should find out who the best player is, not who the best rich player is. So how do you do that? You could extend the levels. I would be interested in playing in an event that extended over a month period.

It was only four days when I won it, but they were long excruciatingly grueling days. A lot longer than the typical day now. The first week of the main event today would be equal to the first two days of the tournament I won because of the staggered starts. They had to adjust the format that way. It was absolutely the right thing to do. I don’t mind a day off between days. I’m lazy. Some people like playing 50 hours straight—I’m not one of those guys.
