The HORSE Winner Should Be Called World Champ

Posted by Andy Bloch

I am really looking forward to the HORSE event tomorrow. First of all, I like to play all of those games. I think a lot of people are going to be playing in it simply because it’s a marquee event, but a lot of them don’t play razz or stud very well.

I also like my chances because it’s going to be one of the smaller fields. The biggest estimate right now is 200. Even if there are 200 players, it will still be much easier to win that event if you’re decent at all those games than it will be to beat a 2,000-player field, even if you’re ten times better than average. It’s just basic math.

I believe whoever wins the HORSE event has a more rightful claim to being the best poker player in the world than the winner of the main event does because of the sheer numbers. In the main event you have 8,000 or so amateurs, or quote unquote amateurs, and only a few hundred who actually play poker for a living, so the probability is that in the HORSE event 80% or so will be pros.

I really like the timing of it. If it were closer to the end of the Series it would detract from the main event. If it was any earlier, it would conflict with the Tournament of Champions. Having the three big events staggered like that, it’s almost like the Triple Crown of Poker.
