Today 135 players remain in the Main Event. A look at the leader board shows that only a half dozen of these players have names familiar to the poker world. The rest are online qualifiers, unknowns, who have never played in situations as fraught and intense as they will encounter today.
Eighteen years ago, an unknown named Erik Seidel went deep in the Main Event. It was his first poker tournament. I caught up with Erik today and had a quick chat with him about his experiences.
JG: Do you get nervous when you get deep in the big events?
ES: I try not to. It’s so much healthier. Players who come in with expectations of making it to the final table delusional. They have no sense that random things do occur. They don’t understand the random fluctuations.
JG: How did you feel when you were playing in your first big event in 1988? Were you nervous?
ES: I was excited about the way I was playing. I never played in a tournament before and I thought I was playing really well. Even then, I knew not to get ahead of myself.
JG: Are you surprised to see so many young players doing so well?
ES: Not at all. There are all these young multi-millionaires who are playing as well as the pros. The real surprise was that the pros did so well last year. We all knew this influx of talent was coming. So I’m not surprised at all.
