Hand of the Tournament Thus Far
This hand went down between two bracelet holders– Marc Vos and Chris Ferguson. Vos was sitting directly to Ferguson’s left. In the hand, it was folded to Ferguson who was on the button. He raised, making it 3k.
I’ll let Marc Vos pick it up from there:
Vos: “I was in the small blind with King-Jack suited. It was folded to Chris Ferguson who had about 70k to start the hand. He raised it to 3,000. I decided I could probably pick it up with a little raise, take him off of Ace-rag or a small pair or something. He thought for a little bit and called. I’m putting him on a very strong hand here. He’s not likely to defend with a weak hand; I’d been playing pretty tight.
The flop came out A-J-T. I figured if he’s got a pair of Queens or maybe a pair of Kings he’s going to lay it down, and if he’s got a small pair, like 9s or 8s, he’s definitely going to fold. So I bet out 12k. He thought for a little bit and called. At this point, my hand’s totally dead; I’m hoping for a Queen.
The turn came a Jack , which is horrible for me. I have trips with the best kicker I can have without having a full house. I didn’t like the situation, but I felt I had to lead out. Because he could have A-K, or A-Q or a flush draw. So I bet out 15k, which is pretty week, because it was about a 40k pot. He called fairly quickly. At that point my hand is dead. I was half hoping for a King on the river and half not, because it could bust me.
The river was a blank. I checked. He went all in for 20,000. I was fairly certain he had tens full or Aces full, and I folded.”
Chris Ferguson then came by, and offered, “You made a good laydown on the river.” Chris let us know he had Aces.
Why smooth call the re-raise on the flop? Ferguson said, “I figure I’m going to get at least a bet on the flop. I didn’t want to scare him out, because I didn’t think he was that strong. I smooth called all the way down. The flop was a little scary, though. I thought was giving him a straight draw – I didn’t know if he had a King or Queen, but he could.
The turn’s a beautiful card for me. I figure I’m unbeatable. “
