How Did Paul Wolfe Find the Rail?

Posted by Jay Greenspan

Yesterday, I reported that Paul Wolfe disappeared after a couple of days of patient play on the short stack and resurgence just before the dinner break. Then he was gone.

Today I caught up with Paul, and heard about his final hand. Here’s how Paul described the play:

Wolfe: “There were 1000/2000 blinds. Third position makes it 5,000 to go. Fourth position calls him. I look down in the small blind and see Ace-King. I make it 25,000 to go, leaving myself with 68,000 left. I didn’t move in, because I wanted to leave myself room to fold if he has Kings or Aces and moves in over the top. [Third position] thinks forever, then calls me.

“The flop comes 9-2-5. I move in. He sits for about four minutes. He finally calls me with pocket 7s. I hit an Ace on the river, but he hit the set on the turn. My nightmare: I’m going to be seeing that 7 of clubs for years to come.

“What a call. He called about one-third of his stack to win with pocket 7s.

“This was a guy I hadn’t made one move on the whole day. I was totally shocked.”

I asked Paul to assess his opponent’s play. He said, “If I was going into it with 7s, and this flop comes, I’m not taking five minutes. If I put someone on Ace-King and see that flop, I’m not taking four minutes. He counted his chips down and decided that he wanted to gamble with about one-third of his chips.”

Paul is now headed home to Florida, where he can spend time with his new baby.
