With the non-stop promotion of No Limit Hold ‘em, whether it’s the WSOP, WPT, PPT, Celebrity Poker Showdown, insert random tourney here, it is easy to find yourself exposed to and inevitably only playing one game. Wouldn’t life be boring though, if all you ate was steak for dinner? The same goes for poker. Full Tilt has the biggest variety of games online and you should take advantage of them. It will improve your overall play and you never know, you may enjoy it!
A lot of people have the misperception that No Limit Hold ’em is the only game where big money is involved. This is far from accurate. If they’d look around, they’d find that some of the biggest games going on right now, as well as historically, have been Limit games. The Big Game in Vegas is typically a mix of Limit games, the infamous Andy Beal vs. The Corporation game was Limit Hold ’em, with multi-million dollar swings, and some of the biggest online games going on here at Full Tilt are the $1K/$2K Limit Omaha 8 or Better and Hold ’em. Just watch recent Full Tilt phenom TexasLimitKing in action, it’s mind boggling.
This year, the HORSE Tournament returned to the World Series of Poker with a $50,000 buy in, the largest in WSOP history. When reading down the list of entrants, virtually every name was recognizable. No one expects to start at those levels, but basically every one of the top pros worked their way up through the ranks starting at low limits, and now are mixed-games specialists. Full Tilt pros like Phil Ivey, Jennifer Harman and John D’Agastino all cut their teeth playing Limit Hold ’em, and Stud and Omaha variations. Playing these games built their focus, memory, and opponent reading abilities. To play like a pro, you need to learn like a pro.
If you’re not comfortable putting your bankroll on the line learning a new game, there is nothing wrong with dropping down to the play money games to get a feel for pre-flop hand strengths, assessing pot odds and drawing possibilities. You’ll most likely find that there are many other players looking to do the same. Also, there is some great discussion to be had in the Full Tilt Forum about any of the games available here. Taking advantage of the insight and experience of other players can be a huge benefit, and should not to be overlooked. Remember, don’t be afraid to ask questions when you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Don’t limit yourself to No Limit, expand your abilities. You never know, aside from the challenge and enjoyment of learning new games, you may find one that you dominate! Steak again? I think I feel like having some fish tonight.
