They were dropping like flies early in today’s first level. In only 45 minutes 20 players were eliminated. By the end of the level only 52 remained.
Most of the qualifiers who busted today seemed really happy with the way things had gone. Cashing in a major tournament was a major accomplishment for these players. The $15,000 or $20,000 they made here is going to add significantly to their bankrolls or maybe pay off some overdue bills.
As I was walking around the room chatting with the recently busted, I came upon Michael Horowitz, known online as IskillsI. He told me about his amazing luck at the close of yesterday’s session.
There were 81 players remaining and the top 80 would cash. Michael’s stack was desperately short, around 9k. He just needed to outlast one more player. What Michael was unaware of was that across the room there was another player who, on that very hand, was forced all in from the big blind. In fact, this player was so short that he couldn’t even complete the blind. But again, Michael was unaware of this.
In early position Michael found pocket Queens. He decided to push in his remaining chips. The big blind had no choice but to call with his 7-5 off-suit. The flop came 9-5-6; the turn, a 7, gave the blind two pair. Michael was nearly the bubble boy, but an 8 on the turn put a straight on the board and the players split the pot.
Michael doubled up a short time later and managed to last to the next break in the pay structure. He won $20,000 Australian and he’s thrilled.
Elsewhere around the room, subwayjustice is sitting to the immediate left of Andrew Black and Kristy Gazes.

shaniac has a big stack and has position on chip leader Haralabos Voulgaris.

And rob479974 recovered from a very bad run to build a workable stack. He sits at a table with Patrik Antonious.

More form the Aussie Millions as the day progresses.
