Today one of Full Tilt’s online qualifiers, Jonas Buskas, was among the final fourteen battling for a spot at the final table. Play was short-handed, with two tables of five and one table of four. Jonas, with 819k, had drawn a table with only one recognizable pro — Kristy Gazes. Kristy had just over 700k to start the day.
Jonas and Kristy share a word before the start of play
Both these players could be pleased with their starting table. They wouldn’t have to battle Gus Hansen and Patrik Antonius, who were at the TV table, or Andrew Black and Jimmy Fricke, who were at the third table.
But pretty quickly things went badly for Jonas. In the first 12 hands, he played two sizable pots against Kristy, who was directly to his left. He lost them both, cutting his stack in half.
In the biggest confrontation between the two, Kristy raised under-the-gun to 70k (blinds of 12k and 24k with a 4k ante), and Jonas called. The flop came A-2-2, rainbow, and both players checked. The turn brought a 3, and Jonas fired 100k at the pot. Kristy quickly called.
The river brought a 6, making the board A-2-2-3-6. Jonas wasted little time and moved 150k forward. Kristy quickly called, and showed A-4. Jonas tabled 6-7.
Jonas’s stack shrunk to less than 400k. He picked up a few chips with all-ins that forced others to fold, but in this short-handed format, the blinds were putting pressure on his stack.
A couple of more players were eliminated, including Patrik Antonius, who lost a massive pot to Gus Hansen. Jonas was moved to the TV table. Shortly thereafter, he moved all-in with A-Q, but ran into A-K.
For Jonas, the $120,000 payday his largest poker achievement by far. Prior to this event, his biggest take was the package that allowed him to take this trip. He was disappointed with both his placement and his performance today. He commented that he’s lacking the experience that would allow him to close out a tournament such as this. But he’s show the poise and savvy that could make him a serious contender in the years to come.
An video interview with Jonas should be available shortly.
