I’ll save you the gory details of the 31-hour odyssey that took me from Brooklyn, NY to Melbourne. Suffice to say that the trip was exhausting. But we’re all here now — me, the online qualifiers, and the pros — and we’re ready to enjoy what promises to be a very special couple of weeks.

The festivities started this evening with a cocktail party in Breezes, an indoor/outdoor bar in the Crowne Tower. There was an open bar and some very high quality finger foods for all to enjoy. The crowd mixed easily, and pockets formed where small groups discussed the passion they share. Andy Bloch discussed his experiences at the final table of the $25k WSOP HORSE event with a qualifier.

They talked about the hand in which Doyle Brunson held Queens and Chip Reese Kings. Andy made an impassioned argument that one of the players in the hand, and quite possibly both, made a mistake. The way the hand went down, Andy said, someone had to have screwed up pretty badly.

A little ways away, a young tournament pro discussed his recent frustrations with Gus Hansen. The player said that he made a lot of final tables, but was failing to finish strong, usually busting before the big payouts. He was afraid that he was playing too cautiously when the blinds escalated, and he was looking for some tips from Gus.

Elsewhere David Chiu talked tournament strategy and John D’Agostino, a new dad, enjoyed some relaxation, secure in knowing that his in-laws were watching the baby.

Perry Friedman gave some tips on proper golf form to Clonie Gowen as they prepared for tomorrow’s outing. Perry later said that his only goal was to break 200. I’m hoping she finds a better mentor.

Tomorrow, there are a variety of activities planned, but alas, we can only do one each. I’ll be on the outback tour. Others will be covering the golf and tennis outings.

The best gig of my life continues tomorrow.
