#045 – I, Rebuy

Posted by Michael Craig

Last night’s FTOPS rebuy was a big success for everyone except me, though I feel I got some good posts out of it, and played some decent poker. I ended up packing it in early (for me, midnight) last night, though not by choice. On the third hand of the $7,000 Guarantee, I lost K-K to A-A. But, as Bobby Baldwin would say, I slept like a baby: slept for an hour, cried for an hour, slept for an hour, cried for an hour.

Full Tilt is beginning Rebuy Guarantee tournaments on Monday. This is the initial schedule (all times are Eastern Standard Time):

16:30 – $30 + $3 – $5,000 Guarantee
20:30 – $30 + $3 – $9,000 Guarantee
22:30 – $10 + $1 – $5,000 Guarantee
00:30 – $20 + $2 – $6,000 Guarantee

I pleaded with Disco Stu to get one of the rebuy tournaments named after me, but to no avail. Finally, as a bone to throw me, he said MAYBE, if I won all four tournaments.

You will note that I am the first player entered in all four. Pokers are fatalists and pessimists, but only afterwards. Before the game, hope springs eternal.

Clonie Gowen was the only Full Tilt pro who finished in the money last night in the FTOPS NLHE-rebuy event. But she went out in 49th. After a flop of A-K-X, he tried to make a move by pushing all-in with a short stack with T-8. Unfortunately, Kristy_sea, who later won the event, had A-K. A lot of top online tournament players did well in this event. Here is how it finished:

1. kristy_sea – $90,384
2. benba – $56,490
3. cjoseph – $42,367.50
4. LiquidSmoke – $32,011
5. rjmgrace – $24,479
6. THE__D__RY – $16,947
7. NoBadBeatsPlz – $11,674.60
8. bbaker23 – $9,038.40
9. Balla-B13 – $ 6,778.80

The record for rebuys (including the add-in) last night was 11, so one player in the field paid $2,400 to play the event. I felt oh-so-superior in that I was able tomake a valiant, though tragically unsuccessful, run o only $400, until I found out that Mr. Twenty-Four Hundred made the final table. I am, as is frequently the case, shut up on the subject.

A few other notes/questions/requests for comment:

A. Last night, five of my seven updates had titles cribbed from another source. Since I have rejected thousands of requests for five bucks during the FTOPS, I will now pay one out. The first person to (a) tell me the source of those titles at my table during the FTOPS event tonight and (b) type in the URL of The Full Tilt Poker Blog by Michael Craig gets five bucks from me.

B. Is anybody reading/enjoying my notes from the Andy Beal/Ted Forrest “War Between Two Furies”? It takes some time to develop but I’m madly typing away. I hope you like it.

C. I will not frequently be covering tournaments from “my perspective, as player”, though I did it last night. One of my bosses – I have many – suggested it as something different and I tried it out. I wrote the stuff so fast – I was at some tough tables with a lot of noteworthy hands – that I didn’t read it while I was writing it, or since. As many readers are themselves online tournament players, I don’t think the main reason you’re going to read this Blog is to find out about the magical experience of being an online tournament player. But I tried it out. Was it worthwhile reading? If I’m at a final table of one of these, I’m sure I’ll do it again. Otherwise, it’s not going to be a regular part of my repertoire, though I would like your opinion so I can evaluate. Either post something in the Forum or e-mail me, michaelcraig@fulltiltpoker.com.

D. Tonight’s FTOPS #8 will be Pot Limit Hold ‘Em, hosted by Rafe Furst, a brilliant man and a very nice guy. He is also the defending World Series of Poker Pot-Limit Hold ‘Em champion, and co-author of the chapter in THE FULL TILT POKER STRATEGY GUIDE – TOURNAMENT EDITION (Warner Books, coming June 1, 2007) on Pot-Limit Hold ‘Em. He is also a legend in the game of rock-paper-scissors and authored a chapter on THAT in the Full Tilt book, too. I’ll be playing the event tonight, putting me above $2,100 in unrecovered FTOPS expenditures.

E. I will post some more of my Andy Beal-Ted Forrest game notes later today.
