Heat 1 of the second round featured eight matches which varied in advance appeal between ”who?” and ”wow?” What follows were my impressions, noted by time to keep them roughly in order, by match. I started the match planted about six feet from Shannon Elizabeth’s left hip, but by the time the cards were in the air, I had been removed to press row, in the back of the bus.

The cards were in the area at high noon, just 90 minutes after the stage call. They start with 40,000 apiece, and blinds of 200-400.

By the time many of you read this, the matches I’m previewing will be long completed. But read on! The great thing about a competition like this is that anything is possible. When they haven’t played the matches yet, you can imagine anything. While the reality sometimes matches the imagination and on rare occasions exceeds it, every matchup is full of possibility before it happens. This is how the Final 32 shape up:

I took my seat in the corner of the bleachers by table 3 for the diamonds bracket, the fourth heat of the day. There were no shortage of interesting match-ups by I wanted to watch Clonie Gowen and Kristy Gazes play close up. The Storm vs. The Gaze. It was a Tilt Eat Tilt world, like much of the fourth heat. Don Cheadle and Phil Ivey, the feature table, were both wearing the Tilt logo. So were Howard Lederer and Brad Booth. And so were Chad Brown and Yosh Nakano.

During the second bracket of the first round, the spades bracket, I decided to sit behind Ted Forrest and watch, close-up, his match with Sam Farha. The Forrest-Farha matchup was one of the most intriguing of the first round. They played an epic match last year that lasted longer than any in the short history of the Championship. They maxed out the blinds and both men were almost down to the felt. Ted, of course, prevailed and went on to win, but either man could have won.

They are just getting ready to start the third heat of the heads-up championship. Mike Matusow is at the feature table in the hearts bracket (the third heat today), getting ready to square off with friend and foil Daniel Negreanu. ”I just want to have fun. I don’t care if I win.”

Katie Lindsay is the young, smart, funny, pretty, friendly poker correspondent who is doing video interviews from the Championship for Pokerwire.com. She is a good friend of mine and a degenerate gambler. As she squeezed by me in press row just before the start, she said, “Now I have to figure out a way to bet.” To be nice, I offered to take the opposite side of most of the clubs bracket. We negotiated a couple of them where we both wanted the same side.

”Pure boys!”

For some reason, I remember that line from a high school play. I think it was MUSIC MAN, when the townspeople were expressing their concern about a new pool hall in town.

The pairings party for the heads-up championship was at PURE, the ultra cool nightclub at Caesars Palace, and it was a very nice event.

As I drove into town Thursday afternoon, I called Clonie Gowen to ask if she wanted to come with me to Fashion Show Mall. I had two baggage errands to run. ”Me and Shannon have to get scanned for an Activision poker game but if you’re by in a half hour, we’d love to come to the mall with you.”

Well okay then.

What if they called a war and no one showed up? Poker is constantly flirting with that possibility. As it gets bigger and bigger, and as the risks to poker’s future expand, I always wonder, at least a little, if this is when the bubble pops, when we all look a little goofy going so crazy over a game of cards.

The Heads-Up Championship is an especially thin-skinned balloon. It’s Big Time TV. They do everything first class. They act like a big sporting event is happening, populated by superstars and celebrities.

What if it falls flat? There was a distinct possiblity, I thought, when I was offered a chance to stand NEAR the red carpet before the pairings party on Thursday night.
