“IT’S A FU—IN’ WAR”

PAGE 645

Andy bets all the way with A-high to 3 clubs on board and straights out there. Ted calls down with 6-6, wins $700k.

That was a desperate move. Ted usually shows no emotion but he seems slightly peeved. He should be thrilled. How is Andy going to keep from losing more if he does that? (Is that the old Andy rearing up?)

Andy bets, gets Q on river. $500k in – bets. Ted folds.

Deficit is $3.3M now

Has the Wildman returned?

Ted’s button – Andy 3 bet w/AJo – one club – 2 low clubs on the flop, one on the turn. They checked it down. He won $300k in the showdown.

Ted has ditched the pyramid – more conventional towers

1:32 PM – new dealer

It’s about $3.2M for Ted. (It may have been more than $3.3M when I wrote that before.)

1:36 PM – Andy -$3.25M

1:50 PM – Andy down $2M (maybe $1.8M or $1.9M)

I wonder if my role is like a reference in fencing? Dueling? Sides concerned with loss of honor?

It’s been a pretty strong turnaround, though Jen did that v. Andy and still ended up -$5M. Will Andy be able to hold on, now that he’s within hailing distance of even, that it appears he can, or has averted disaster? 1:56 PM

I notice that Andy does NOT have large hands. His fingers are actually pretty short. He chews his nails too.

Ted looks like he’s a little [illegible] – he’s throwing his chips in the pot, and throwing his cards down, even when he wins.

Like for emphasis.
Ted’s stack is $5.75M
Andy is -$2M at 2 PM

But who seems like they are winning?

How long ago was Ted up $4M? (1:22 PM)

[I erroneously labeled consecutive hands as “HAND 3”. This was probably because I was simultaneously scribbling notes from a conversation I had with Andy during the break immediately before these numbered hands. In my notebook, I wrote them in a second column on this page. They appear here after HAND 4]

2:10 PM

HAND 4 – Andy – raise, call
Ted bets flop, fold.
Ted $200k

ON BREAK [This was from the previous break, when they changed decks and dealers at approximately 2 PM. Typically, everyone walks quickly down the ramp at the edge of the room and makes a fast left past the show-ticket desk for the restrooms. Occasionally, Andy and I would make small talk as we walked trotted back and forth.]

Andy: “It’s a fuckin’ war.”

Mike: “But isn’t it fun?”

Andy: “No, and that’s the sad part. It should be fun. But by the third or fourth day, it’s just a grind.”

* * *

Andy: “Ted picked up a tell on me. That’s how he got me all those times. But I figured it out and got him back.”

* * *

Andy: “It begs the question, why do I do it? What else am I going to do? Sit around all day? I guess I feel I have something to prove.” [Note Beal’s clarification at the 6 PM deck and dealer change.]
