I just busted out in 210th place, about 90 short of the money. There might have been one mistake in there, but it was just a marginal one. Otherwise, it was mostly opponents who wanted to get their chips in with the worst of it or, at best, a coin flip. Pretty much like I said in the previous entry.
Right after the break, I raised – I’m playing under 20% of my hands in this tourney – in late position with J-J. The big blind pushed and I called. He had A-3o and hit an ace. Several hands later, I re-raised a shorter stack all-in with A-Q and he called with 3-3. I did not improve.
One of the blinds reraised all-in after I raised with A-J in late position. I called and my opponent turned over J-J. A few railbirds thought the call was clearly a mistake. In fact, the reraiser was a pretty tight player (though I played only about 20 hands with him) but it was actually a pretty easy call. You’re going to get abused pretty easily if you don’t call when you get reraised after a late position raise. After factoring what I know about the reraiser, I’ll probably call with a lot weaker hands than A-J. If you don’t call with at least (approximately) half your raising hands, opponents can automatically reraise you and make money. And if you don’t feel comfortable with those calls, then don’t be a player who raises very often.
Finally, still with about half the chip average, I had A-9o in the big blind. I called a middle position raise. The flop was A-K-T. I checked, the raiser bet. I’m screwed if he has a better ace but with the size of the pot, it’s all getting in eventually, so I wanted to keep him from drawing. I pushed all-in. He called with K-Q and hit a jack on the next card. The other player’s play is probably correct, but just barely. By the call on the flop, he was getting 2 to 1, which is about what he was getting if I had a single ace. (He had 9 outs against an unpaired ace.) He’d be foolish to think I’d bluff there but he obviously beats a bluff. But he’s got fewer outs than 9 if I have a straight made or two pair or an ace with the same gutshot draw.
Ugh. I thought this was the time I got the FTOPS monkey off my back. If you have any comments, you can send them to suicideking@fulltiltpoker.com.
