#174 – WSOP #23 – The Education of Miss Shannon Elizabeth, Part IV
PART IV – STUPID GUYS, UNLUCKY GIRL, or 105 MINUTES OF IGNORANT BLISS
I didn’t even remember to ask her what table she was at, so I thought I’d have to brave the mob in the hallway at the first break to find her.
Congestion turned out not to be a problem. We traded cell numbers the night before and she left me the following message at 1:45 PM, less than 2 hours after we started:
“I HATE LIMIT. Sorry – I’m super unlucky – It seemed I always started ahead and got called by someone luckier than me. Sorry – I suck!”
So I lost my $500 and any chance Shannon Elizabeth is going to become a pinup girl for the STRATEGY GUIDE, at least for the limit hold ‘em chapter, which is really one of the best in the book.
If that was the end of it, it would have been fine. I gave the tournament a good run but came up short, busting after the dinner break.
But Joe Reitman, of all people, wouldn’t let it die quietly. During the second break, I passed him in an aisle and asked him how his girlfriend Annie Duke was faring in the Mixed Split event, then in the middle of Day 2. (She later finished third.)
After he told me about her latest bad beat, he said, “There was something I’ve been meaning to ask you.” He started twirling a strand of his long curly hair around a finger. “I understand you buy people into events and stuff. I was wondering what you could do for me.”
Geez.
Joe saw his ex-wife and asked why she was playing limit hold ‘em. Shannon mentioned my encouragement and, being a smart-ass, Reitman couldn’t pass up the chance to rib me about it.
“Listen, Sweetie,” I told Joe. “$5,000 PLO with rebuys is starting in 20 minutes. Keep it under three rebuys and we’re down, okay hun?”
He continued to bust my balls until I realized mea culpa was my only way out.
“Joe, I admit that acted like an idiot. I imagine a lot of guys act like idiots around Shannon Elizabeth. But it’s not like I MARRIED her or something.”
That left Reitman speechless, which is actually quite an achievement.
