#212 – WSOP #61 – Last Day at the End of the World

Posted by Michael Craig

Today is final table day at the World Series of Poker. My plan is to scam myself premium access I otherwise don’t deserve, free food, maybe take a couple things “to go”, and overhear a bunch of things I’m probably not supposed to be hearing.

I already know what’s going to win: some dude.

No disrespect intended toward the event or the players. But you’ll be able to read, on Pokerwire or one of the other sites diligently reporting the final table activity. You can also watch the ESPN pay-per-view, on which I might appear in the middle of the night, if it goes on long enough and they get really desperate for guests.

I want to find something you’re not going to read anyplace else. I don’t know what that is. I don’t know where I’ll find it. And if I do find it, I don’t know when I’ll be posting it.

I may or may not post my experiences today. I will them sometime soon but probably not in real time.

I may or may not show what it’s like in the ESPN truck. I may or may not show what it’s like in the audience. I may or may not show what it’s like to be Jeffrey Pollack or Ty Stewart today.

I will do my best and get right back to you. I’m also relieved this experience is ending because it will give me a chance to (a) write about the things I missed telling you, and (b) write about the totality of it with some perspective.

Here is some of what’s coming:

* “Six-Eighty” – My shortest and most meaningful conversation ever with Annie Duke.

* Party Animal Annual – The party scene right before the Main Event, including an encounter with final tablist Lee Watkinson’s chimp.

* Harrah’s Valedictory – A report card on how Harrah’s did this year. Some of the results may surprise you, especially those who read my very first blog on the Series, in which I compared last year’s Series to Woodstock and suggested this year’s could be Altamont.

* 27 Hours to Dawn – My (mostly) 27 consecutive hours spent in the Amazon Room at the start of the Series and the panorama of images that immediately impressed the ‘07 Series on my consciousness.

* Viva Los Muertos – The craziest night in the history of the World Series of Poker, and that’s saying something.

* Dr. SHOE – My remaining observations from my second successful tournament experience at the Series.

* The Last Testament of Michael Matusow – What I saw at Mikey’s final table the other night.

* Night of Laundry and History – Learning the history of Texas hold ‘em while Andy Bloch does my laundry.

* Routines, Superstitions – Why I search for the Spanish-language radio station.

* Hell on Hellmuth – Behind the scenes while writing the profile on Phil Hellmuth for BLUFF.

* How it feels – My comprehensive description of what a World Series event “feels” like in its various stages as a player.

And more, I’m sure.

Thanks for reading. Root for me to get something good to share out of today.
