#277 – FTOPS VI Preview – I’m Hot AND I’m Due

Posted by Michael Craig

Back on October 5, I wrote about the coming FTOPS VI. I presented the schedule along with my personal plans for play. I concluded by writing, “OK, so it’s not set in stone.” What I meant was that I was setting a personal limit on losses – we all know that I’m destined to do nothing but lose at FTOPS – at $2,000. But even the Full Tilt schedule is subject to change and they added a new event. And maybe … maybe … I’m thinking of playing a few more events. Here is the schedule, with the added Event #15, the $150 + $13 NLHE Knockout event on Sunday, November 18, starting 4 hours before the Main Event.

#1 – Wednesday, November 7 – 21:00 – $200 + $16 NLHE – 6 handed

#2 – Thursday, November 8 – 21:00 – $300 + $22 Razz

#3 – Friday, November 9 – 21:00 – $200 + $16 PLHE

#4 – Saturday, November 10 – 15:00 – $500 + $35 PLO – 6 handed superstack

#5 – Saturday, November 10 – 16:30 – $100 + $9 NLHE – rebuys

#6 – Sunday, November 11 – 14:00 – $100 + $9 Stud EOB

#7 – Sunday, November 11 – 18:00 – $300 + $22 NLHE

#8 – Monday, November 12 – 21:00 – $1,000 + $60 NLHE – superstack

#9 – Tuesday, November 13 – 21:00 – $200 + $16 PLOEOB

#10 – Wednesday, November 14 – 21:00 – $300 + $22 NLHE – rebuys

#11 – Thursday, November 15 – 21:00 – $500 + $35 HORSE

#12 – Friday, November 16 – 21:00 – $200 + $16 LHE – 6 handed

#13 – Saturday, November 17 – 15:00 – $2,500 + $120 – NLHE – superstack

#14 – Saturday, November 17 – 16:30 – $100 + $9 – PLO – rebuys

#15 – Sunday, November 18 – 14:00 – $150 + #13 – NLHE – knockout

M.E. – Sunday, November 18 – 18:00 – $500 + $35 NLHE – superstack (Main Event)

My original plans were to play events ## 2, 7, 11, 12, and the Main Event. That would be Razz, NLHE, HORSE, LHE, and the Main Event. When I chose these originally, I focused on the non-NLHE events because I did pretty well outside NLHE at the World Series. But I stuck in the $300 + $22 and $500 + $35 NLHE events because I figured “I was due.”

Now I’m thinking I should put in some more events because “I’m hot.” I’ve been doing well since October 5, with a fifth in the Sunday Mulligan, a Sunday HORSE final table, and winning the first $16,500 Guarantee Knockout event. But even that is too results-oriented. I just feel I’m playing NLHE tournaments very well, regardless of the outcomes.

So it’s a given that I have to play the new event, #15, because that’s a Knockout event. (I should be miffed they didn’t ask me to host it, but I’ll grant that Erik Seidel’s career accomplishments exceed mine. Don’t you agree?)

That puts me up to 6 events and about $2,150 in outlay. I really want to play the first event. Even though all I’ve done is give away my chips in every 6-handed event I’ve played for 6 months, I used to own those things. So I’m DUE. And it’s the first event. How can I skip the first event?

I’m already playing the second event but I’m having doubts about whether I can pass on the PLHE event on Friday. That’s the event where I cashed in the last FTOPS and the one in which I have the best miss in the FTOPS before. I might sign up.

I signed up for the Saturday afternoon event, $100 + $9 NLHE with rebuys. Even though I’m strongly negative in rebuy events, I truly believe there’s great value there for me. I’ve played excellent during the rebuy period in nearly every rebuy tourney I’ve played, and I think I understand better than most players how these are much deeper-stack tournaments than usual, and how to exploit that. I’ve bubbled in a few of these recently.

Because I’m already planning on playing the Sunday NLHE $300 + $22, I signed up for the event 4 hours earlier, the $100 + $9 Stud EOB. How many chances will I get to play a $100 SEOB tournament? Gotta do that.

And I’m almost ashamed to admit it but I’m thinking of plunking down $200 + $16 and playing the PLOEOB on Tuesday, November 13. I think I played a single $5 tournament on Full Tilt at this game, and I vaguely remember playing a bunch of SnGs on Party about 5 years ago. I’ve wanted nothing to do with the game and make fun of it whenever I can. But when I saw that Chris Ferguson was hosting it, I had an idea: maybe I could have Chris give me a lesson in the game, which I’ll post before the tournament, and then play it.

I’m already down for the HORSE, the 6-handed LHE, and the Main Event. If all my “maybes” become “yes”, my outlay will rise to $3,000. Plus rebuys.

Sigh.
