#289 – Bird Beat on Cancer
Rafe Furst e-mailed me the other day to tell me there’s another Bad Beat on Cancer tournament coming. It’s going to be the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 23, at Noon, EST. The password, listed right there on the (private) tournament lobby, is “badbeat.” It’s $5 + $5 and the latter $5 goes to cancer education and research. You can see where you’re money is going at BeatCancer.org. Several players are putting bounties on themselves and I’ll do the same if I play.
If?
I’ve always supported this cause and it’s especially close to me because of my wife’s cancer. But I’m traveling over Thanksgiving and can’t say 100% for sure that I’ll be able to get to a computer at noon (EST) on Friday. I’ll try, and if I make it I’ll come up with something special for the person who busts me.
Incidentally, I was in an especially low mood last week because Jo Anne’s third chemotherapy treatment put her in awful shape. We’re talking about an amazingly strong and upbeat person unable to get out of bed, in tears over how bad the medicine was making her feel.
That feeling lasted a week. By last Friday, she was back to normal – well, what passes for normal conceding at least some effect from all those toxic chemicals eating away at her – and has been fine ever since. The fourth treatment is scheduled for Thursday the 29th. One of our cousins is being bar mitzvahed in Atlanta and Jo Anne’s very sad she can’t go. I’m going in her place and the service and reception are December 1. We’re expecting a bad time back in Scottsdale, though the good news is that the darkness passes, the sun rises, and life goes on.
And we hear the medicine she gets for treatments 5-8 isn’t as bad. But that could just be someone toying with us.
