PART I – APPROACHING A NEW GAME

Chris made it clear to me at the outset that he liked the exercise of explaining how he prepared to play an event at which he had little experience and about which little has been written or even passed around as general strategy. He wanted me to make it clear that he was NOT claiming any expertise in PLOEOB. [For the purposes of this article, I used the abbreviation PLOEOB for Pot Limit Omaha Eight-or-Better, PLO for Pot Limit Omaha, and OEOB for Omaha Eight-or-Better.]

I’ve done very well in tournament poker since I met Chris Ferguson in December 2005 and it’s not a coincidence. My role as editor and co-author of THE FULL TILT POKER STRATEGY GUIDE – TOURNAMENT EDITION was the perfect excuse for me to take hours and hours of Ferguson’s time to teach me the intricacies of tournament poker. I played well in tournaments on Full Tilt in 2006 and even better in 2007. I had a great World Series last summer. All the time spent talking about the game with Chris (as well as other great gaming minds like Andy Bloch and Howard Lederer) had the predictable effect on my own poker.

Still, things were so bad at one point on Thursday that I had to accuse Chris Ferguson of costing me opportunities to cash in two FTOPS events.

The first event of the sixth series of FTOPS ran on Wednesday, November 7. The event was $200 + $16 NLHE, 6-handed, and it had an ambitious guarantee of $750,000, a lot for a “specialty” event being held on a week night. 3,676 players entered so they missed the guarantee by about $15,000. That’s tiny in an event this size, though it’s one of the few times I remember an FTOPS event falling short of the guarantee.

I took Harpo, the Million Dollar Dog, to the vet today for his follow-up treatment on his ear infection. (Incidentally, the vet’s staff all refer to him as “the Million Dollar Dog”.) When I picked my son Barry up at school, he asked, “Did the swelling go down enough from them to look into his ear canal?”

The first two FTOPS events have concluded and all the Full Tilt pros, myself included, have drawn the collar. I’ll write about my experiences in the first two events over the weekend, but I also want to preview for you an exciting entry that’s coming by Monday.

Chris Ferguson is hosting Tuesday’s FTOPS event, $200 + $16 Pot Limit Omaha Eight-or-Better (PLOEOB). For a form of poker he has hardly ever played – indeed, few people have ever played it much or for a lot of money – I thought it would be interesting to find out how he approached it. Our discussion was fascinating, both in how he thinks theoretically about a new form of poker and how he views the various moving parts. I will post his thoughts by Monday.

Just to let you know the quality of this ideas, I have entered the PLOEOB event.

Back on October 5, I wrote about the coming FTOPS VI. I presented the schedule along with my personal plans for play. I concluded by writing, “OK, so it’s not set in stone.” What I meant was that I was setting a personal limit on losses – we all know that I’m destined to do nothing but lose at FTOPS – at $2,000. But even the Full Tilt schedule is subject to change and they added a new event. And maybe … maybe … I’m thinking of playing a few more events. Here is the schedule, with the added Event #15, the $150 + $13 NLHE Knockout event on Sunday, November 18, starting 4 hours before the Main Event.

Because I’ve pointed out the poor performance of the Full Tilt pros, myself included, in the FTOPS, the next running of which starts later this week, I wanted to point out when a Full Tilt pro does something good:

Incidentally, did you see that Mike Matusow went on a blind date with Kathy Griffin for her show? Google the two of them and you’ll get the link on YouTube. It’s hilarious, though the funniest thing is actually an inside joke.

I think it’s time our West Highland White Terrier, Harpo, got a job. He’s been a wonderful dog, as sweet a companion as you can imagine, but he costs more than a car. [Upon reading this to my daughter Valerie, she remarked, “He doesn’t cost more than a car. He costs more than a HOUSE!”] We nicknamed him “the million dollar dog” even before the events of October; he had major intestinal surgery a couple years ago and suffers from allergies that require that he eat prescription dog food and periodically get expensive medicines and treatments.

I am increasingly asked, by reader e-mails and players I run into while playing on Full Tilt, about various aspects of my private life. Though I have a zone of privacy – theoretically … I suppose – I recognize that the more I tell you about my life, the more you want to know. Especially because of what I’ve disclosed about my wife Jo Anne’s battle with breast cancer, I’ve gotten a lot of requests about her.
