[I apologize in advance for the length of this post, and for its delay. I dictated it right after the Mitchell Report was released but my fog of pain and pain medication over the last several days made it impossible to clean up the voice recognition errors, which averaged about 1 per sentence. I think I dictated the original under the influence of percodan, which may have caused me to ramble a bit. I tried to clean that up in the editing but it's still pretty long.]

George Mitchell, the former Senate Majority Leader, released his report to the commissioner of baseball about the use of steroids. Mitchell repeatedly referred to baseball’s recent history as the “steroid era”. In all, it was a dark day for baseball. Paradoxically, it also wasn’t very surprising. Anybody even casually connected with baseball-and really just about anyone paying attention knew that some of the game’s biggest stars were using performance enhancing drugs. It’s not that big a leap to imagine that was only the tip of the iceberg. The Mitchell report confirmed this and probably underestimated the scope of the problem because of the difficulties in getting cooperation from current players.

I think I may have aged about 20 years in one week. I was actually looking forward to my 49th birthday last week. Good family, good health, the prospect of good work to come – those are at the center of a good life. Somehow, it all collapsed into a pityfest. I’m miserable that Jo Anne has more than two months to go of chemotherapy. I got some infection on my left middle finger – which I need to write and type as well as to gesture. I had to spend a couple hours in the emergency room having them slice it open to drain the puss. Now I’ve got a temperature of 101.5 and I did a couple things I try never to do: unregister for tournaments and not play in tournaments for which I have registered. So apologies to the Blogger Skill Game, a great bunch of guys who were nice enough to ask me to play.

Completely coincident to my post on the subject, Harrah’s annoounced yesterday (December 12) that it is going to award a trophy, called the David “Chip” Reese Award to the winner of the $50,000 HORSE. I suspected they were considering this and, naturally, I applaud their decision. As of today, no response to my suggestions for the trophy itself.

But they are busy at Harrah’s having just the day before announced the schedule for the 2008 World Series of Poker. I’m looking this over right now and will post my thoughts and dreams on the subject sometime in the next week.

Dear Jeffrey & Ty:

I’m writing this letter because of our mutual interest in honoring the legacy and memory of Chip Reese. I’ve read Harrah’s heartfelt statement following Reese’s death last week and I want to propose a fitting tribute.

I’m surprised that people don’t know how Chip Reese got his nickname. They assume it had something to do with his skill at cards. In fact, it was prescience and coincidence on the part of his parents. David Reese received his nickname before he was even born.

David “Chip” Reese, regarded as one of the world’s best professional gamblers, died last night, December 3, 2007, at his Nevada home. According to Doug Dalton, his friend and Director of Poker Operations for MGM-Mirage, “Chip was feeling under the weather for the last couple weeks but didn’t take it that seriously. He died last night in his sleep.”

The flaw I can most easily identify in a large number of semi-skilled/semi-successful young players is a need to express themselves when they see someone play in a way they consider different and therefore inferior. It is frequently though not exclusively directed at me. I take great advantage of this flaw, though it has never to my knowledge been revealed in an instructional book or article.

It’s taking me some time to realize it but my days as the Boy Wonder are over, and they ain’t coming back. My 49th birthday is less than 2 weeks away – December 14 if you want to mark your calendars – and though I definitely don’t feel old, spending as much time as I do playing poker online makes me realize that I am.
