I played the Bellagio Second Chance Tournament a few times while I was in Vegas in April, never with much success. I did, however, meet some interesting people.
The most interesting of my new friends was a fellow named Joey, who was seated to my left. Silver-haired but youthful, even his casual mannerisms gave the quiet impression that he has spent a lot of time playing poker and knew how to play it well.
We were in the 1 and 2 seats and there were some strange, wild players in the 7 and 8 seats, so a few voce sotto comments led to friendly conversation. He lives in L.A. and is friends with Dan Harrington. They played together back in New York in the halcyon days of the infamous Mayfair Club. Joey was familiar with SUICIDE KING after Harrington gave him a copy to read because I wrote about the club.
He told me that Dan can be very tight with a dollar, which fits his image as a sensible person. He’s generous and he’s not cheap, but sometimes on little things Harrington will be very careful with his money. In October 2005, they were both in from California to play the Bellagio Festa al Lago, which concluded with the Doyle Brunson WPT Championship. When they both made it into the money (Harrington eventually finished second to Minh Ly, earning over $600,000), they both realized that they were short of socks and underwear. So, before they started playing on Day 3, they went to the nearest store to rebuy. That happened to be the upscale Fashion Show Mall on the Strip. They walked into Neiman Marcus at 10 AM when it opened and made a beeline for the men’s department.
This is ridiculous, Dan told Joey. Fifteen dollars for a pair of socks? Harrington led him on a goose chase through the cavernous shopping center to a cheaper department store at the other end of the Mall. There, Dan found a 6-pack of socks for $12. “See, Joey? Give me six dollars and we can split the bag and have three pairs of socks apiece.”
