There are 22 people remaining in the Aussie Millions main event, and I recognize two of them, Erik Seidel and Max Pescatori. A guy named Antonio Casale has the chip lead; apparently he’s a local who’s played at the Crown Casino for years. Word around the poker room is that he’s a nice guy, but not exactly the most feared player in the city.

The question that everyone is asking is why the established players have fared so poorly. This event seemed tailor-made for the super-skilled pros. The field was big, with 780 entrants, and from what I’ve heard, quite weak. The structure was slow, and the stacks for most of the tournament were deep.
Is it just variance and chance? Every now and then you’d expect some aberrant outcome, where less skilled players dominated the pros. Or did the pros just play badly?
I’ll do some asking around over the course of the day, and try to see if anyone has any theories as to why the tournament has shaken out the way it has. I’ll also do my best to follow Erik and Max. But it will be difficult. They’re playing at the TV table, which is a good distance from the poker room. There’s a closed-circuit feed from the table, but there’s no audio, so following the action is tough.
