First off, my email for the trip: ask_aussie_millionsATyahoo.com. Feel free to drop me a line.
Yesterday Howard Lederer won the $100,000 buy-in no-limit hold ‘em tournament. The first place prize was $1,250,000. The field for the tournament was spectacular, and featured a mix of the old and the new guard. Howard was one of the players who learned the game in the pre-Internet age. Erik Seidel, Chris Ferguson, Andy Bloch, Tony G, Jeff Lisando, and Phil Ivey made their names (and a good chunk of money) in the brick-and-mortar world, long before the first blind had been posted on-line.
There were others in the field who are clearly the stars of tomorrow.
Even if these guys never get a minute of TV time on ESPN, they may very well end up being some of the wealthiest players the game has ever seen. Erik Seidel called them the “young geniuses.” They include Nikolaus Jedlicka, known online as KaiBuxxe. Jedicka, who finished fifth in the event, plays the biggest online games and is among the most feared high-stakes PLO players in the world. Jeff Garza, known as ActionJeff, had a great showing as well. In fact, he had a great chance of winning the event. He was poised to take a massive chip lead with five players remaining. He made a huge and difficult call against Lisandro, picking off a semi-bluff. But Lisandro hit, and Garza soon headed for the rail. Tom Duan, known as durrr, also went deep. Duan may very well be among the best five or six online players in the world.
After watching Garza, Jedicka, and Duan play for several hours yesterday, I couldn’t help but be impressed. It wasn’t just their mastery that made an impression. These guys have already proven their greatness. It was their maturity—their professionalism at the table—that I didn’t expect. They took and distributed their beats with the same impassive quiet you’d expect from the likes of Lederer or Seidel.
I hope to post more from the $100k tournament later today.
