Yes, there is a poker tournament going on today. Day 1c of the Aussie Millions $10k Main Even is proceeding about 200 feet from me. But let’s be frank: Day 1 of any tournament is pretty bland. Some accumulate chips, about half go bust. You know the drill. The really interesting stuff will start tomorrow and the following day, as the field thins and the pressure builds. There’s also a big cash game going tonight, and I’ll blog about that later.

Rather than update you on the minutiae of the initial levels, I thought I’d give my impressions of our host city, Melbourne. But I’m not writing a Frommer’s guide here, so I’m going to focus one two specific aspects of the city for which I have deep interest: food and women.

This morning, Full Tilt Pros offered presentations and a panel discussion for its online qualifiers. Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson, Andy Bloch, and Clonie Gowen delivered short talks, and then a panel that included all the aforementioned pros as well as Steve Zolotow, Ben Roberts, and Scott Clement took questions.

It was a very interesting couple of hours. Andy delivered a very technical session on pre-flop play; Chris delved into post-flop decisions; and Howard offered a really inspiring talk on the mental approach of the game. What follows are some notes I took during the talks. I’ve also included a short audio clip from Howard’s talk.

I asked readers for suggestions about how I could cover FTOPS VII and you responded in impressive numbers. For awhile, I failed to grasp that many of you seized on a superb idea because (a) it was the same idea, and (b) it was a not-so-veiled request that I back the correspondent in an FTOPS event.

In bringing you up to date on my home-bound activities of late, I should also mention that I’m playing a little poker. And by “a little,” I mean that I don’t play when I’m asleep. I do, however, dream about the game.

I’ve been on a roller coaster on Full Tilt the last couple months. When I went “off circuit” after returning from WSOP-Europe, I played my best and most consistent two months of online tournament poker. I won tournaments, made a bunch of final tables, and actually felt I underperformed because I busted from a number of big tournaments in bizarre ways. But I had reason to feel good about my game coming into FTOPS VI in November.

I hope that last blog didn’t give you the idea my life was some kind of grind. Far from it. Despite feeling bad about not being able to do more for Jo Anne, things are great.

Well, there’s also the problem I’m having writing.

The $10,000 buy-in Main Event of the Aussie Millions just got underway, and the powers that be took an interesting approach to the kickoff. They actually had a short opening ceremony. It was what you might expect form an Olympic opening ceremony if the Olympics had 500 or so competitors and half as many observers.

Everyone’s attention was draw to a raised platform (an area that normally serves as a bar/grill) where a trio started into a competent and energized version of INXS’s New Sensation (they’re Australian, you know).

FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD

I love the stuff that Jay Greenspan is contributing to the blog from Australia. I recommend that you keep up and I’m personally going to see if I can occasionally try out Jay’s style in some future blogs.

But I don’t need to convince you to read Jay’s blogs from the Aussie Millions. You’re reading his updates in such large numbers that even some of my most frequent correspondents are saying things like “Fired huh? Guess it was inevitable” and “Haven’t heard from you in awhile. Enjoying Jay’s blog. Got his e-mail address?”

First off, my email for the trip: ask_aussie_millionsATyahoo.com. Feel free to drop me a line.

Yesterday Howard Lederer won the $100,000 buy-in no-limit hold ‘em tournament. The first place prize was $1,250,000. The field for the tournament was spectacular, and featured a mix of the old and the new guard. Howard was one of the players who learned the game in the pre-Internet age. Erik Seidel, Chris Ferguson, Andy Bloch, Tony G, Jeff Lisando, and Phil Ivey made their names (and a good chunk of money) in the brick-and-mortar world, long before the first blind had been posted on-line.

There were others in the field who are clearly the stars of tomorrow.

Today is a very busy day in the Poker Room at the Crown Casino. The world’s most expensive tournament—a $100,000 buy-in—started early this afternoon. Not surprisingly, the lineup is phenomenal. Table 3, for example, includes Howard Lederer, Erick Lindgren, Allen Cunningham, Dan Shak, and Phil Ivey. The other tables are no easier.

But I’m going to ignore this premier event so that I can introduce a pro few of you know–Amanda Baker, or as her friends call her, Mandy B.

 Meet Mandy B.

Yesterday two busloads of pros and online qualifiers headed to one of Australia’s nicest golf courses, the Capital Golf Club. Those taking to the links could play 18 holes, or a much as they could stand before the 41-degree Celsius heat – that’s 106 Fahrenheit – forced them to the clubhouse.
