After watching several hours of play today, it’s pretty clear why some of these players have made it this far in the tournament: they’re excellent preflop players. Nico Behling, for example, has been absolutely relentless. He made Max (the Italian Pirate) Pescatori’s life absolutely miserable. Every time Max opened a pot, Behling threw a re-raise at him. “It’s getting very annoying,” Max warned after yet another re-raise. Soon after, Max check-raised Behling’s flop bet of 80k. Max made it 250k. Behing, after the shortest thought, popped it another 300k and Max folded.

It’s was tough for Max for a long time. He clearly wasn’t catching cards and his aggressive opponents whittling his stack down to nothing. Pescatori’s finally headed to the rail in ninth place, when his A-Q couldn’t connect when racing against a pocket pair.

I caught Max after he busted, and we was nice enough to give me a very informative interview, which you can hear by downloading the file below.

Erik Seidel, the only other player remaining with an International reputation, had been encountering similar problems. He faced pre-flop pressure and lost a very large pot against the Aussie Million’s local hero Antonio Casale. Casale raised pre-flop and Seidel called from the button. Casale bet the flop, A-K-J, and turn (K). Casale moved all in on the river, and Seidel quipped, “I’m starting to believe you might have something.” Casale replied, “I do. Two cards.”

Seidel gave away almost 500k in the hand, and looked ready for a premature exit. But, of course, Erik Seidel is not someone to be trifled with. He proved it in this confrontation with Peter Ling.

Ling bet out on the turn, with a board of 6-6-7-Q, and was raised by Seidel. Ling popped it once again, effective forcing Seidel to make a decision for his tournament life. Seidel though long and hard but eventually put all his chips in. His T-7 was up against Ling’s K-J, and Erik doubled up. He’s now among the chip leaders.

We’re down to 8, and the TV final table will be 7. One more elimination and we’re done for the day.
