#436 – WSOP Notebook #9 – Weight, There’s More

Posted by Michael Craig

The World Series of Poker has suddenly become very weight conscious. I was at a table with Howard Lederer in the $2,500 Mixed EOB event (more about that later) and he told me he got a call the night before at 3 AM from Erik Seidel.

“Phil Ivey is driving out to your house right now. Do you have a scale?” Seidel has apparently made some kind of weight-loss bet with Phil Ivey and he needed to get weighed, pronto.

Howard said yes and, to keep anyone inside the house from waking up, waited outside with it for Phil. Ivey showed up, asked how the digital scale operated, and stepped on it, fully clothed and carrying a Blackberry.

213 pounds. Ivey then started chewing out Howard for not being trusted to give an honest weight. Howard let him rant and, once he left, sent a text message to Seidel with the weight. Seidel asked how many rolls of quarters Phil had in his pockets while he was standing on the scale.

I told Howard that he made a mistake getting involved. Not for the grief he’s gotten from both sides, but because Erik Seidel should take it on himself to get more friends who have not only a scale but a metal detector and X-ray machine in their homes.
