Phil Hellmuth is in a pissy mood. It’s 7:10 PM and more than ten minutes after the re-start, he says, “Where’s Andy Bloch? The guy ships ninety dimes with two sevens and now he’s gone?”
Phil is referring to hand just before the break in which Phil raised with A-Q and Andy Bloch pushed all-in, a big overbet. Neither Andy nor Phil were deep enough – and they BOTH would have had to be deep enough – to call and try to hit a seven.
Phil spent a long time thinking about it, and he kept saying, “Anybody but you, Andy, I fold this.” Then Hellmuth said he had A-Q.
Andy laughed and quietly said, “Come on, Phil. Let’s gamble.”
Phil postured for awhile, throwing it in, saying, “I was going to call you until you started talking.”
With much hesitation and after a lot of prodding, Bloch held up his cards then threw them in. Because he held them up, Mike Matusow revealed that he saw a seven, leading Hellmuth to conclude correctly that Bloch had pocket sevens.
Phil, of course, was beside himself, as he would have been if Bloch showed A-A, A-Q, A-2, K-K, or 3-2. We can’t be certain of anything in this life but as sure as I can subjectively be, Phil Hellmuth would have pontificated (and likely complained) no matter what hand he was against.
