#544 – London 2008 #51 – Million Dollar Cash Game – Durr-roller Coaster
I don’t know if Tom “Durrrr” Dwan has bigger balls than the rest of the world, or just more of them. But he has no problem playing almost every hand and playing aggressively. Everyone at the table has made a big deal of how often he plays, but it seems he still raises every time in late position or reraises every time someone else raises in late position. And he’s not afraid to back up such obvious plays with more chips on later streets.
Just now, several players limped on his small blind. He raised to $12,000 – there was also a live straddle by Ivey on the hand. Hellmuth in the big blind folded but Ivey called, Matusow called, and Benyamine called. So everybody thinks he’s making a play and he’s out of position against that lineup.
There’s now more than $50,000 in the pot and the flop comes 8d-9d-Qc. Tom stares at it, playing deliberately, and bets $35,000. Phil Ivey takes so long thinking that Matusow doesn’t realize it’s not his turn and he folds, which causes a brief fracas. Finally, Ivey folds and Benyamine follows, Tom taking down another bunch of chips in his march toward profit.
I’m on the floor now and hope to stay here for the duration but every time I get to watch with the hole cards exposed, Tom seems to be looking to make a play nearly every hand.
Against the best in the world.
And they know he’s doing it.
And still he keeps it up.
And, on balance, it’s been working and he’s within $100,000 of break-even. But it’s a dangerous game and I feel a vibe that Phil Ivey is going to play a big pot with him.
