#575 – CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT – 3B – TOURNAMENT STAR
I’m trying to get a few things confirmed with Scott Montgomery before I post my profile of him, but I didn’t want to delay the contest suggested by his tournament prowess. This is a slightly modified version of the “Buy the Coach” contest. It replaces that contest.
You’ve made the Final Table of the Main Event of the 2008 World Series of Poker. Congratulations!
But don’t rest on your laurels. You’ve made $900k but there’s up to $8.1 million more on the table. With almost four months between making the final table and playing it out, you have an unprecedented opportunity to improve your chances.
What would you do? Who would you engage? To what end? For what compensation?
That’s the contest; here are the rules:
1. Put yourself in Scott Montgomery’s position – Seat 4, 19.69 million chips – and tell me what you’d do about a coach. I won’t automatically disqualify entries based on length but consider 100 words as the recommended length.
2. HINT! HINT! HINT! Based on the entries I received in the previous version of this contest, I think some people had the idea that THEY were the coach/strategist. I’m not looking for you to share what your final table strategy would be. The idea here is to tell me who you’ll hire as coach, what you’ll pay them, why they’ll do it, what role they’ll play, etc.
3. These are the actual final table positions and chip counts:
Seat 1 – Dennis Phillips – 26.395M
Seat 2 – Craig Marquis – 10.21M
Seat 3 – Ylon Schwartz – 12.525M
Seat 4 – Scott Montgomery – 19.69M
Seat 5 – Darus Suharto – 12.52M
Seat 6 – David Rheem – 10.23M
Seat 7 – Ivan Demidov – 24.4M
Seat 8 – Kelly Kim – 2.62M
Seat 9 – Peter Eastgate – 18.375M
When play broke, they were near the end of Level 33, 120k-240k blinds, 30k antes.
4. Entries will be judged on soundness, ingenuity, originality, and the likelihood they could be executed. Although I may try to engage advisors to assist me, judging is by nature subjective and my decisions are final.
5. E-mail entries to mrchaotic@aol.com. The subject line should read as follows: TOURNAMENT STAR. Due to spam programs and the variety of things that can happen to an e-mail, I bear no responsibility for mislaid entries, regardless of the cause. But I strongly, strongly, STRONGLY suggest that anyone who sent in a prior entry send me a new one. The rules are different, I gave an important hint, and you’re allowed multiple entries.
6. Entries must be received by Midnight, ET on Thursday, November 6. Late entries will be dealt with at my discretion. I will attempt to name winners on Monday, November 10 and post the winning entries and some of the others during the following week, most likely after I complete my coverage of the Final Table.
7. To the extent I can, I’ll use the entries that people made for the “Buy the Coach” contest, simply because someone who entered and stopped looking at the Blog – always a bad idea – might not notice that I modified the contest.
8. All entries become the property of The Full Tilt Poker Blog and may appear, in whole or in part, edited or unedited. Bloggers, either reporting the contest or results or participating in the contest, may freely quote contest information and entries, provided they link to The Blog. Any bloggers wishing to enter will receive the same courtesy if their entries are quoted.
9. Prizes: The best response will receive entry into FTOPS X, Event #14, $200 + $16 NLHE-Turbo, scheduled for 21:00 ET, Tuesday, November 11. At my discretion, the prize be substituted with tournament credit. Entrants must be eligible to participate in FTOPS X to win.
10. All rules are subject to my whims and my decisions are final.
And remember, multiple entries are allowed, and you are allowed to enter all three contests – this one, Cash Game Killer, and the soon-to-be-announced Man of Mystery.

Great contest, I’ll be sending in an entry and discussing this on my own poker blog.

I would hire Dan Harrington to coach me. He has the most experience at the final table, including a win. He seems like a guy who may be willing to help and add to his reputation. Being in 3rd place, I would try to pay anywhere from $25k-$50k. In order to maximize Harrington’s advice, I would read his books so there could be some high-level discussions that could be the difference between the win and 5th place. I would have Harrington at the final table so I could talk things over after a hand or during a break.
