#605 – World Series Heads Up #2 – Eastgate is Backing Up Demidov

Posted by Michael Craig

As we proceed beyond the opening rounds of this battle, Peter Eastgate has most definitely asserted himself. After a brief period in which Ivan Demidov’s assaults evened the score, Peter connected solidly on some big pots and has the Russian backpedalling.

It’s near 1:30 AM and they are about 15 minutes into the 500k-1M/150k level. Eastgate has established a solid lead, first by winning the big pots and, now that he has 2 1/2 to 3 times his opponent’s chip total, by bringing the action to Ivan.

In a decisive hand about an hour ago, Demidov swung wildly on the river, betting 7 million. Eastgate countered instantly by calling with second pair, which was good.

Is the Russian reeling? Is the Dane moving in for the kill? Demidov is clearly looking for one punch to reverse the momentum but the young Dane is trying to keep Demidov off balance by picking up the small pots, waiting out his good hands for Ivan to bet, and keeping in his crouch, minimizing the chances of Demidov landing a roundhouse punch and doubling up.

But as if to prove how fluid these fighters pursue the action, Ivan has won 4 or 5 small pots in a row. Perhaps Eastgate is covering up, sitting on his chip lead, giving Demidov a chance to seize the initiative. Even if Ivan is hurt, he is still capable of jabbing and moving, and of landing the big blow.
