I’ve been like a maniac today, watching the updates on the WPT’s web site for action from the Main Event at the Bellagio Five Diamond. As I mentioned yesterday, I have 1% of Clonie Gowen – an incredibly generous birthday present – and my friends Andy Bloch and Mike Matusow were hanging in.

What a day!

Andy Bloch held on with short chips for a long, long time before busting 27th. Clonie Gowen continues to amaze, but not really surprise. Despite getting barely a mention in the updates all day, she made the final two tables, 12th out of 18 in chips.

I’m not even watching Clonie for the 1% – when I told Jo Anne about the deal, she bought a pair of boots and suggested Gowen’s going to have to make the final table for me to benefit from that money. I’m just pleased that she’s capping off such a successful – and difficult – year like a champ. My whole family is watching the action. While I was out on an errand, Jo Anne called to tell me that Clonie won a big pot to move near the chip lead. Then my son Barry updated Jo Anne to tell me she lost a few of them on a subsequent pot.

And maybe a little part of me is like the kid whose parents are getting divorced so he asks Santa to get them back together for Christmas. I’m imagining this scenario where Clonie makes the final table, she and Full Tilt patch things up, and she’s back in the red-and-black.

I realize that’s ridiculous, impossible. It would be like snow in Las Vegas.

The other remarkable story is Matusow. The Beast is back.

Mike’s averaging, like, what … a final table a month these days? I was watching his chip counts the first day or so, to see if he was playing in the event and if he was sticking around. And that’s what he was doing: sticking around.

I swear, it didn’t seem like he ever had average chips on Day 1. Or Day 2. Or Day 3. And he was low all day today. Then with 3-4 tables left, Mike got some cards, or found a gear nobody else had. Now he’s in the last two tables, with above-average chips.

It’s looking like an exciting finish. They play down to the final six tomorrow at the Bellagio. All I need is someone to ask me to watch and for the roads to open.
