#632 – Engulfed by Biloxi #2 – Weird, E.G.

Posted by Michael Craig

I got myself (mostly) dressed, entirely in clothing I conveniently stored on the floor, and raced downstairs to get my first look at Beau Rivage. Nice enough place. In Vegas terms, I’d put it above Rio, around Mirage, maybe even nudging slightly toward Billago. The place was pretty new when they had to rebuild after Katrina and that was less than two years ago, so it has that “new casino” feel that makes any place seem nicer.

But the vibe was a little weird – that you could put that down to whatever drugs were in the chili I at before laying on top of my bed, fully clothed, and waking up 14 hours later.

Weird, e.g. – I saw a guy shooting craps with ghosts. At least that’s how it seemed. The guy was standing over an otherwise empty craps table playing. I don’t mean he was leaning on the table or resting or smoking a cigarette. I mean he was reaching for the dice.

Weird, e.g. – Rushing around, hopelessly late, I learned I had to get an MGM Mirage Players Club Card to enter the event. I had a card, just not with me. So I went downstairs to the far-off corner where you get such cards. I was slowed by a woman pushing a wheelchair. Very slowly. Parade speed. I waited behind her, trying to be respectful, but finally saw an opening between banks of slot machines and made my move. The old woman leaning on the wheelchair was pushing a pile of dirty laundry.

When I finally arrived at the Players Club, there was a line. A really long line, like Department-of-Motor-Vehicles long.
