#644 – Engulfed by Biloxi #14 – Gavin is Out

Posted by Michael Craig

Gavin Smith, nursing his ever-shorter stack all day long, finally got his chips in and got unlucky. He busts with about 90 players left on Day 2 of the WPT Southern Poker Championship. Gavin was talking with a friend a few moments later when I caught up with him, asking if he was leaving town right away or if he wanted to have dinner tonight.

“I don’t think I CAN leave town right away.” His friend said, “There’s not a flight to Vegas until Saturday.”

“No way,” Gavin moaned. “There’s gotta be a flight before then. And if there’s not, I’ll drive back and get there before Saturday.”

I have Smith my number and told him to call me if he wanted dinner, and he was gone. Too bad I didn’t have a chance to give him some additional information:

1. The driving distance between the Beau Rivage and his home in Vegas is 1,817 miles.

2. I’ve made the second half of that journey (Amarillo, TX to Flagstaff, AZ and Flagstaff to Vegas) as part of many, many trips and it is composed of some of the most desolate, featureless scrub that the government ever thought to run a highway through.

3. The Big Texan, in Amarillo, offers a 72-ounce steak for $59.95. If you sit up on their stage and eat it all, with the fixins’ (a gigantic baked potato is the show – and colon – stopper), it’s free.

4. I’m an excellent, superb long-haul driver.

I don’t think I’ll be hearing from Gavin about any of this but I guarantee you if I do it’ll make one hell of an adventure.
