#655 – News From the Michael Craig Desk, Part I – We Wuz Robbed

Posted by Michael Craig

I’ve been really fighting to keep my head above water the last several days. Consequently, some of the Full Tilt news updates have been sitting on my computer, half-written for several days. In addition, I have another pair of blogs with some good things for online tournament players to think about, currently incomplete.

We wuz robbed.

A modern-day Bonnie & Clyde (actually named Gary & Sarah according to the victims-rights form) were allegedly cruising the area in the early hours of Tuesday morning looking for cars to burgle when they discovered the bad guys’ version of a Perfect Storm. I was home all day Monday, except for five minutes when I picked Ellie up at school. Because I was in such a rush, I uncharacteristically put my wallet in the car’s ashtray instead of my pocket. Then I left it there – because I’m not used to remembering to take my wallet out of the ashtray – and compounded the problem by forgetting to lock the car.

Then Jo Anne did something almost identical. She went grocery shopping on the way home from school, so she got home late and was rushing to unload the groceries and start dinner. As a result, she was overloaded with groceries, her computer, and her giant bag of teaching materials. In the rush that followed, she neglected to make the second trip outside to take her purse and lock the door.

The good news is they caught the alleged criminals and recovered somewhere between most and all of what was stolen. The bad news is the story of the last four days, in which Jo Anne and I found out it’s actually harder to replace stolen items when the police end up with them than when the crooks succeed. (I should note at the outset that the Scottsdale Police have done an excellent job. I’m not accusing them of doing anything wrong; the system simply treats you better when your stuff is gone than when it’s found.)
