#687 – NBC Heads-Up Championship #8 – Pairings Party, Part D – King of the Cold
It was so cold outside, even with the occasional heat lamps, that I decided for strategic reasons to spend as much time as I could huddled with attractive women. So I had lengthy conversations with Annie Duke (about Celebrity Apprentice and Darfur), Michelle Lau (about Federational Internationale de Poker Association, which is trying to encourage uniform worldwide poker rules), Katie L (about how she was going to skin me alive and crawl in my carcass for warmth – well, actually, she said she wanted to bet me on the outcome of the Championship which, based on past performance, is about the same thing), Heather B, and Mike Matusow’s girlfriend Jessica.
Only Jessica, who was clearly freezing in a sleeveless dress and whose boyfriend now has almost no body fat, succombed to my offer of a lengthy hug. (She even told me I smelled nice.)
Actually, I got more attention at this party than I usually get. I’m a whore for attention and I don’t deny it, but I expect to be pretty near invisible at a poker event with this cast. But Michelle Lau, giving me the benefit of the doubt on the reach of The Full Tilt Poker Blog, engaged me in a lengthy conversation about an upcoming charity event and some of the work of the FiDPA.
Several people noticed my shoes. I thought people were making fun, but when I said, “If you want a pair, you have to custom-order them from Nike,” they were, without exception, impressed. A few people also seemed to have gotten word about my world-record for the biggest online poker tournament comeback.
The attention helped keep me warm, but not nearly as much as the three-minute hug from Jessica.
