Just as the second level was concluding, all hell broke loose. Tom Dwan busted Barry Greenstein. Jeff Ishbia, very low on chips, doubled up against Phil Hellmuth. Elky busted Ilarie. Daniel Negreanu busted Dario Minieri. And Paul Wasicka won a pot worth almost all the chips against Don Cheadle.
All this between 4:38 and 4:44.
The Dwan-Greenstein hand was one of those unfortunate hands where everybody played it right and someone was going to have to go broke. After a flop of 9-T-3, they got it all-in. Barry had A-T for top pair. Tom had Q-J, the super-outs hand – winning with an eight, queen, jack, or king. And he hit a queen on the turn for a higher pair. Barry, in turn, had nine outs on the river, but didn’t hit one. Tom Dwan moves on, though Barry, as usual, played flawless, exemplary poker.
Negreanu was apparently well in control of his match against Dario at the feature table. He got Minieri all-in after the turn with only a gut-shot draw. Daniel had pocket queens for an overpair. He busted Minieri and Phil Ivey and Vanessa Rousso took over the feature table. (Let me repeat, this is a great idea, refilling the TV table. I can’t believe they didn’t do this in the past, but it’s going to make the broadcasts much stronger now they are doing it.)
Paul Wasicka, with an overpair, won almost all the chips from Don Cheadle, who made top pair after the flop. Wasicka finished off Cheadle on the next hand, winning the last 3,000 chips with 4-4 against Q-J.
Forrest went way behind Nguyen in their match when he threw away his pocket queens on the river with two kings on the board. He got all-in shortly after with 6-6 – Scotty limped with A-Q and called the all-in. Ted was good to the river, but Scotty got the ace to move on.
Shortly thereafter, just after 5 PM, Phil Hellmuth took the last of Jeffry Ishbia’s chips with pocket queens against K-7. Ishbia fought all the way, but Hellmuth was too tough for him, especially withs ome cards.
At 5:05, John Juanda finished Gabe Kaplan, leaving just Phil Ivey and Vanessa Rousso battling it out. Keep in mind, this is only 1:05 after the matches started. There’s not a huge amount of play by this level but these matches went even faster than the earlier ones.
At 5:20, Vanessa Rousso finished off Phil Ivey, T-T vs. 8-8. (The smart money is on Ivey playing online later tonight or going to the stationary bike. Or both.) This sets the Sweet 16, puts me at 8-8 as a predictor, and puts us on break until 7 PM.
