#720 – Jo Anne’s Hair Stylist is in Jail

Posted by Michael Craig

The world isn’t especially kind to women of a certain age. Jo Anne is very youthful for 49. She has a dazzling smile and good skin. But she doesn’t have a single friend who knows her original hair color. And after a year of cancer treatments, Jo Anne’s hair came back lush and thick, but also curly and snowy white.

I thought she looked great with silver hair, like Jamie Lee Curtis. But I was fine with her coloring it and, as it grew out, getting it styled to be straighter. She likes the way it frames her face better when it’s straight and if she likes it, I like it.

Remember those blogs from early February when I told you Jo Anne and I were awakened by the police at 5:30 AM? I think, as a general rule, any news that comes from a wake-up phone call has twice the impact. So I was automatically suspicious when we got a wake-up call from Jo Anne’s hair salon. She was scheduled for a 3 PM appointment but they asked if she could come in at 2. Because she had other plans, she explained that maybe she could make it by 2:30 but not any earlier. They said they would call back.

A few minutes later, the salon called back and said 3 PM was fine, but her regular stylist Gwen wouldn’t be there.

“Why?” Jo Anne asked.

“Because she’s in jail. Do you want to cancel or do you want Kristin?”

As soon as Jo Anne hung up the phone, we started firing questions back and forth:

1. Why was Gwen in jail?

2. What was that first call about? If Jo Anne had said, yes, she could come in at 2 PM, does that mean Gwen would have been there at 2? Did she have a court hearing at 3 or something?

3. Why would the receptionist tell Jo Anne that Gwen was in jail, instead of simply saying “Gwen can’t make it in today”?

4. Was Gwen alright? Gwen has been doing Jo Anne’s hair for more than two years. She also sometimes does Valerie’s hair, which is so curly it practically requires surgical tools for cutting and styling. We are both former lawyers and know some excellent Phoenix lawyers. Was there any way we could help?

5. Can Kristin do a good job? Because jail or not, my wife likes the way she looks with straight hair.
